Hoteliers agree: Sprawl is ravaging Bavaro Beach
Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic’s Hotels and Tourism Association (Asonahores) on Monday said they support the complaint by Higuey’s labor unions (CASC) on the sprawl and destruction of Bavaro Beach and asked the Tourism and local authorities to establish strict order on services provided in all tourist areas.
Asonahores vice president Arturo Villanueva said the problem isn’t just the locals and foreigners who sell services to tourists without permits, but also that some officials issue licenses without having the authority to do so.
He called on the tourism authorities to review and regulate the permits issued in tourist areas.
“People who aren’t authorized have been issuing illegal permits and I’m sure that the tourism police will take all steps to control that, but I invite the Tourism Ministry to carefully check them because there are many given by persons who are not authorized,” Villanueva said. “No regional or local authority should approve permits to foreign nationals who don’t fully comply with requirements.”
