Located in a protected area of 48.36 square kilometers of ocean – land territory and is the second place in the Dominican Republic where Manatee ( Trichetus manatus ) lives. If you visit this sanctuary, you will realize that it is surrounded by the largest area of mangroves and are best preserved of all the coastline of Puerto Plata: red mangrove , white mangrove , button mangrove and black mangrove .
Also the Cabarete caves is in the Natural Monument Lagunas Cabarete and Goleta ( Choco ) and it takes approximately one hour and fifteen minutes to get there from POP. A cave system formed by more than 30 caves of which 3 can be visited: the ” Voodoo Cave ” , the “Cave Museum ” and ” Crystal Cave ” . This cavernous formation is approximately two million years old, and it is a home to thousands of bats that eat fruit and insects.
For those who like to get in touch with the rural side , Puerto Plata has the Chocolate Basin Altamira ( The Chocal is a project run by 22 women belonging to the Network of Rural Women ( REMURA ) in the Altamira municipality engaged in the development of organic by-products of cocoa. With 25 cocoa products and other fruits harvested with special care , there are also wines , liquors , cookies , cocoa and chocolate are extracted.
