Grammy Award winning musicians to perform at Dominican Republic Jazz Festival
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — Grammy Award winning musicians will perform at the 18th Dominican Republic Jazz Festival (November 6 – 9, 2014) on the north coast of the island, in the towns of Puerto Plata, Sosua and Cabarete.
Latin jazz drummer Ignacio Berroa, originally from Cuba, will perform on Saturday, November 7 in Sosua. Berroa will play with his band Ignacio Berroa’s Quartet (USA) with special guest Giovanni Hidalgo (Puerto Rico). Berroa has worked with such maestros of the jazz world as Dizzy Gillespie, Chick Corea, Tito Puente, and Danilo Perez to name a few. Berroa will also participate in free music workshops for Dominican youth in conjunction with FEDUJAZZ, the Dominican Republic Jazz Festivals music foundation.
Joseph Lovano is a Grammy Award winning saxophonist, composer, and arranger. Lovano was named Jazz Artist of the Year in 1995 and 1996 by DownBeat magazine, Musician of the Year, Improviser of the Year, and Best Tenor Saxophonist in the 1998 New York Jazz Awards. He also topped both the Down Beat readers and critics polls as Tenor Player of the Year in 2000.
Lovano attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music in the early 1970s and received an honourary doctor of music degree from the college in 1998. In the fall of 2001 he began a teaching residency in the Berklee Ensemble Department, known as the Gary Burton Chair in Jazz Performance. Since joining the Berklee faculty, the Blue Note artist has released eight albums as a leader and appeared on dozens of other recordings.
Lovano will perform at the jazz festival as a special guest with the Berklee Global Jazz Institute on Friday, November 7 in Sosua, and on Saturday, November 8 in Cabarete with his band Joe Lovano’s Quartet.
The festival is free, but VIP Tickets are available, with proceeds benefiting the music foundation FEDUJAZZ. Motivating and developing young artistic talent, FEDUJAZZ supports the education of Dominican children using jazz as the teaching platform. Musicians performing at the festival will participate in free workshops for local youth, a full schedule of master classes and free workshops can be found on the festival website.
More internationally acclaimed musicians participating in the 2014 Dominican Republic Jazz Festival include Ramón Vázquez “TríoS” with Daniel Díaz, Edmar Colón, Raúl Maldonado and Yan Carlos Artime (Puerto Rico) with Special Guest El Prodigio (Dominican Republic), Javier Vargas with the Big Band Conservatory of Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic ), Colin Hunter & Joe Sealy’s Quartet (Canada), Patricia Pereyra and Band with Musical Direction by Rafelito Mirabal and Guy Frometa (Dominican Republic) with Special Guest Alex Jacquemin (France), Edgar Molina (Dominican Republic) Wavelength – The Original (Israel), Benny Martinez (Dominican Republic) and La Familia Andre (Dominican Republic).
Since its inception, the Dominican Republic Jazz Festival has presented internationally renowned Latin Grammy and Grammy Award winning musicians such as Chuck Mangione, David Sánchez, Ray Baretto, Néstor Torres, Chucho Valdés, Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez and Arturo Sandoval. Additional jazz greats have included Stanley Jordan, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Danilo Pérez, El Canario, Ismael Miranda, Cuco Valoy among many other talents.
