Farm projects near Lake Enriquillo 80% finished
Santo Domingo.- Work on eight Government projects near Lake Enriquillo (west) to help thousands of families displaced by its unchecked flooding and which has hobbled the area’s farms and livestock are more than 80 percent complete, Dominican Agrarian Institute (IAD) director Radhames Valenzuela affirmed Monday.
The official toured the area to inspect the work on the projects El Espartillar, El Limon near Jimaní, Bartolomé and Boca de Cachon, among others.
“We’re working day and night to assure president Danilo Medina’s pledge to change the situation of these families who’ve lost everything due to Enriquillo’s flooding and wait for the work to resume their agricultural tasks”, said Valenzuela, accompanied by several officials.
He said that in the case of El Limon de Jimaní, the project on 240 hectares (3,800 tareas) of land that will be for family vegetable gardens, while El Espartillar in Duverge, its 940 hectares (15,000 tareas) will be for corn.
He listed Tierra de Guzman, also 240 hectares, Las Tres Luces, with 40 hectares, the Cerro Colorado, and Las Clavellinas, both with 70 hectares in Villa Jaragua, Independencia province are the projects ready for planting.
Valenzuela said all of the agro projects are equipped with modern irrigation systems for farmlands and reservoirs to store water. He also inspected farming projects at Las Baitoas, in Independencia province, with 30 hectares of ready for planting.
