EU donates funds for agricultural program
Santo Domingo.- Minister of Agriculture Ángel Estévez led an inauguration event for an agricultural policy program that is being implemented in 17 countries in the region, with an investment of more than RD$480 million donated by the European Union.
The minister said that the Agricultural Policy Program is supported by the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation in Agriculture (IICA) and its aim is to create regional capacities for sustaining small-scale famers, including young people and women, in rural communities.
The event, which took place at the Agricultural Ministry, Estévez informed that this support from the European Union has come at the best time, because there is harmony between president Danilo Medina’s will and that of international development organizations to strengthen the country’s production niches.
He said that the ministry was implementing policies aimed at boosting the transformation of agricultural production and to strengthen the animal and plant sanitary system.
Antonia Calvo, in charge of business affairs for the EU delegation in the Dominican Republic, said that small and medium-scale farmers should also aspire toward producing for export, and that this could be achieved through the PPA.
She added: “I am convinced that the Medina government and the Ministry of Agriculture in particular will make the most of this program and strengthen its support for small and medium-sized producers”.
The IICA representative in the country, Manuel Sánchez, stated that the great challenge faced by small farmers is to use new technology for enhancing the productivity of their lands.
