Environment says they will do what is convenient at Loma Miranda
SD. The Minister of the Environment warned yesterday that with Loma Miranda they will do what is most convenient for the country, “nothing more, nothing less.”
The statement by Bautista Rojas Gomez comes in reference to the position of the Director of Mining, Alexander Medina, who favored the exploitation of the mine by Falconbridge Dominicana, in spite of the opposition of ecological groups that seek the conservation of the hill as a national park. “We respect the opinion of each person, but the opinion of the Ministry of the Environment is the opinion of the Ministry,” the minister reiterated.
He recalled that the responsibility of his ministry is the environment, not to grant concessions. Rojas Gomez said that there is still “a lot to go” in order for the environmental impact studies are concluded, since they are still waiting for data that should be delivered by the mining company.
