Education increases teachers’ salaries 10 per cent
SD. The Minister of Education, Carlos Amarante Baret, announced yesterday a salary increase for the 70,925 teachers in the public education system. The increase represents the expenditure of an extra RD$252,741,206 each month.
The increase that will be applied starting on 25 January represents an additional 10% in the salaries of the teachers. Education will invest RD$3.385 billion this year for this concept.
Amarante Baret indicated that the salary increase for the teachers is contemplated in this year’s budget.
As he made the announcement during a press conference, the official noted that the increase is within the framework of the continuity of the policy of dignifying the teaching profession, a fundamental sector for achieving quality education.
He discussed that the measure should serve as an incentive for the men and women in the classrooms, “and an incentive for the new generation of teachers, that feel that it is worth the effort to study Education.”
He recalled that the year just finished saw the teachers’ salaries increased by 20% and incentives were applied. All of this meant an increase of RD$800 million pesos a month.
In December of last year the minimum pensions for 8,959 retired and pensioned teachers was raised to RD$15,000 a month, and made retroactive to October. This will mean for this year a budget investment of RD$821 million
