Don’t pay more than RD$34/pound for chicken
Santo Domingo.- The price of chicken should be no higher than RD$31.5 per pound on the farm, and should stabilize as lower autumn temperatures kill off fewer birds, although their meat costs as high as RD$57 per pound in metropolitan zones.
Agriculture minister Ángel Estevez made the affirmation Monday after meeting with poultry farmers, attended by representatives from most of the national producers.
After the meeting Dominican Poultry Producers Association (ADA) president Bolivar Cartagena said fresh chicken should cost consumers 46 pesos per pound.
Estévez said the authorities and producers seek formulas to ensure producer’s profitability throughout the year and asked farmers to work together to maintain production stable without cyclic price fluctuations.
According to the official, projected production of chickens for this year is around 15.2 million per month; compared with 14.5 million in 2013; 14 million in 2012 and 12 million in 2011.
