Don’t eat lobster during reproductive season
Santo Domingo.- ‘RD Verde’ (green) magazine editor Gibel Orsini de Jimenez on Friday urged Dominicans and foreigners who visit the beaches and restaurants not to consume lobster during its breeding period , from March 1 to June 31.
Orsini said Law 119-12 imposes a ban on the capture and marketing of lobsters aimed at the conservation of the important species, which strikes a balance in the country’s coastal-marine ecosystems and ensures their survival for future generations to enjoy.
She said the ban period on lobsters was established because they are at the height of reproduction and its capture hinders its life cycle and poses a threat to its survival.
The journalist noted that the ban isn’t exclusive to the Dominican Republic, since all Caribbean and Central American countries also enforce it, adding that over-exploitation forced the government to establish it.
