Dominican Republic to protect nesting turtles in busy beaches
Santo Domingo.- The Environment Ministry on Monday announced the launch of a nationwide program to label and orient citizens on the nesting turtles that visit beaches frequented by tourists, to protect the endangered marine species.
The Ministry’s Marine and Coastal Resources Dept. said among the beaches already marked and guides already trained figure Bahia de Las Aguilas, in southwestern Pedernales; El Valle, Samana (northeast); Lavacama, La Altagracia (east) and Manresa, Santo Domingo province.
Among the recommendations that people should adhere to on beaches where environmental authorities have determined that there are turtles nesting figure a ban on artificial lights including campfires, vehicles used in water sports and motor vehicles in the vicinity.
