Dominican Republic halts deportations, bolsters Haiti border

Santo Domingo.- President Danilo Medina ordered a halt to deportations of undocumented Haitians, but reinforced the border to prevent the illegal entry of nationals from that country, three senior officials revealed Friday.

“The executive order stipulates that all deportations will be stopped,” said Presidency chief of staff Gustavo Montalvo.

Interior and Police minister José R. Fadul and Immigration Agency director José R. Taveras said the issuing of temporary IDs for Haitians living in the country has been hampered because most of them don’t have the necessary documents.

“Haiti’s problem is that it has few records of its nationals and everyone knows it, even Venezuela allocated 40 million dollars for them to provide their people with ID documents.” After the earthquake it got worse,” Fadul said.

The officials spoke during the delivery of 200 motorcycles for the Metropolitan Transit Authority- Amet.
