Dominican leader: 10M tourists within 10 years not crazy
Santo Domingo.- President Danilo Medina said Monday the Government ‘s push to bring 10 million tourists within 10 years isn’t a crazy idea and vowed to invest all the needed resources to achieve that goal.
He said as a result of the Government’s efforts to develop the tourism industry, the country receives five million tourists and US$5.0 million per year.
Medina spoke to open the international seminar Managing Tourist Destinations as a Cultural Heritage, where he was handed the Open Letter of the World Leaders’ Campaign, naming him a world tourism leader. World Tourism Organization general secretary Taleb Rifai handed he letter to the chief executive.
The Head of State said reconstruction of the Navarrete-Puerto Plata highway (north) will begin next week and affirmed that his administration makes the investments needed to push that goal as has been done in the east region, where he said “the only thing the tourism region formed by Higuey, El Seibo and Hato Mayor needs is a road link.”
As for the South region, Medina said “there are plans” to develop the Los Corbanitos beach area in Bani, for which the government is building a beltway. “There are investors already interested in this area who’ll be announced soon.”
The Head of State said in Bahia de Las Aguilas’ case, the Government pans to develop the area, but reiterated that the project is halted on litigation.
Senior tourism officials from the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Panama, Haiti, Colombia, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and other countries in the hemisphere participate in the event.
