Dominican Independence Cycling Tour Will Cover Important Tourism Attractions

The Dominican Republic will provide participants in the 35th Independence Cycling Tour the possibility of cycling through some of the country’s most beautiful mountains, beaches and rivers, as well as enjoy some many local cultural events.  The Independence Tour, held during the month of February, the month when Dominicans celebrate their independence festivities, is one of the country’s most important sporting events. Some 200 national and international cyclists are expected to participate in the upcoming event.

More than 200 national and international cyclists will participate in the challenging tournament.  The tour route will lead them through the beautiful Bay of Samaná region, on the country’s north coast, through the centrally-located Constanza Valley, or the historic downtown section of San Pedro de Macoris, a town situated one hour east of the capital city of Santo Domingo.  In all, cyclists are expected to cover some one thousand kilometers.

The tour, organized by the Dominican Cycling Federation, is divided into eight stages and its goal is to raise awareness regarding the many natural and ecological resources the Dominican Republic has to offer.

The Ministries of Tourism and Sports recently announced an action plan designed to promote the country’s beaches and excellent water sports facilities.  The goal is to attract international visitors looking for unspoiled beaches and plenty of water sports.  In the past few years the Independence Cycling Tour has become a great promoter of the country’s tourism industry.

The president of the Cycling Federation, Jorge Blas Diaz, said that the Dominican Republic is ready to receive all participants in the 2014 cycling tour.

The Federation also announced that the U.S. team, Team Shop Smart, confirmed its participation and that, in all, some 15 international teams are expected to participate. For more
