Dominican garment-makers warn of fake ‘Made in USA’ labels

Santo Domingo.-The Dominican Textiles Association (Aditex) on Sunday said textile products with fake “Made in the U.S.A.” labels are entering the country, and demand actions by authorities .

It said the products enter without paying duties, hurting local textile industries and dodging taxes, and asked the Customs Agency to investigate the origin of what it calls large volumes being sold in Dominican businesses

Aditex president David Cortes warned that many goods has been smuggled into the country with “Made the U.S.” labels, “but it’s a contradiction, because that nation has very high costs and labor is up to eight times more expensive, how is it possible that they are now producing, assembling or ready-made garments at that volume?”

He said they suspect the lots are brought into the Dominican Republic from countries which don’t form part of the free trade agreement with the United States, where garment manufacturing is on the decline.

Cortes, quoted by, stressed that an inspection of shops found many brands that said “Made in the U.S.A.”, when it’s the contrary, high costs lead to few garments being made in that country. “We believe those items are re-ticketed. In fact, many of these labels are misplaced, revealing that they aren’t original but have been removed and them put back.”
