Diplomats in Dominican Republic ‘snub’ gay U.S. envoy

Santo Domingo.- Numerous envoys had scoffed at the idea of attending Dominican Republic’s diplomatic corps’ annual gala on concerns the openly gay U.S. Ambassador James Brewster showed up with his “husband.”

Local media revealed Wednesday that Vatican envoy Jude Thaddeus Okolo had asked the Foreign Ministry to see if it was feasible to hold the traditional gala for diplomats on Jan. 22 with the presence of the gay couple, but that the event was cancelled over the awkward issue.

“The Foreign Ministry had said the presence of the gay couple wasn’t feasible since the Constitution doesn’t recognize same-sex marriage,” the journalists Huchi Lora and Amelia Deschamps said Wednesday on Channel 11, Telesistema.

Deschamps noted that the ambassadors should’ve accepted Brewster and his partner because president Danilo Medina had accepted Washington’s openly-gay envoy.

“The Foreign Ministry concluded that the ambassador’s (Brewster) spouse isn’t no registered as his spouse, but as his “dependent” instead,” reports.
