Couriers again complain on Custom’ US$200-tax dispute

Santo Domingo.- The Customs Agency is hindering the couriers’ operations by retaining packages and requiring invoices from customers and the alleged consolidation orders which exceed a cost of US$200.

These allegations form part of a message appearing since last week on the email ‘’ (Customs abuse).

The message claims that nearly two months ago Customs “unilaterally decided to undertake a review of 100% of each of the packages brought into the country by the courier companies, in what they call an audit process.”

The message affirms that in the audit process Customs demanded the bill for each packet coming into the country, whereas those which didn’t arrive with this document endorsed, “were held at Customs at the Las Americas International Airport.”

The courier companies’ complaint comes two months after a dispute with the Customs Agency over the import tax of US$200 on items brought to the country, which forced the government to delay it’s levy on that merchandise.

    Yes they are demanding invoices for all goods imported not just those exceeding $200.

    Even when they have been delivered there is no sign of the packages as there is now a huge backlog in Miami. Thanks customs well thought through.

    The blame being placed on couriers is not valid as they record everything and collect the dues.

    Oh happy Christmas Customs!!
