Controversial US$200M cross-mountain highway ‘starts in days’

San Juan de la Maguana, Dominican Republic.- President Danilo Medina has reportedly pledged to announce in the next few days the start of construction on the controversial cross-mountain highway to link San Juan in the south with Santiago in the north at a cost of US$200.0 million.

The commissions from the South and North regions headed by San Juan Diocese bishop Jose Dolores Grullon provided the information after a meeting of less than an hour with Medina in the National Palacio last week, and said the President revealed that six companies take part in the call for tenders to build the 160 kilometer road, with 26.6 km each.

According to outlet, three companies would begin in Santiago and the other three from San Juan, “because the President is interested in opening the work even if it’s just 24 hours prior to the end of his term on August 16, 2016.”

The road would span San Juan, Juan de Herrera and Sabaneta south of the Central Mountain Range, and San Jose de las Matas and Santiago on the northern slope.
