Construction for controversial mountain highway starts June

Santo Domingo.- The Government plans to tender the Cibao (north)-South Highway in March and start construction in June, to make sure it will be finished and open to traffic before Aug. 16, 2016.

Public Works minister Gonzalo Castillo said the tender has been delayed because technicians have not yet to submit the final report on all options for the route. “We’ve decided to definitively hold the bidding for March and want to break ground in June.”

The official, interviewed on Sunday about the controversial highway’s course, said once groundbreaking is held, work will take place on all fronts to finish it within 24 months.

Castillo noted that president Danilo Medina himself has said he won’t start any project he cannot finish.

He said some of the existing roads will have to be rebuilt, citing the Santiago-San Jose de las Matas highway. “There’s a span from San Juan de la Maguana (west) to the dam (Sabana Yegua) that’ll will be rebuilt, because there’s a swath, but there are some sections that we call green, because they aren’t even trails.”
