Columbus’ lost flagship may have been found

New York.- Christopher Columbus’ long-lost flagship, the Santa Maria, may have been found, says a world-renowned explorer of the mishap, in a storm more than 500 years ago at Hispaniola’s northern coast, U.S. media report.

It said an expedition funded by the History Channel tracked down what it says is the skeletal remains of the ship, which foundered in the Caribbean in 1492.

“At the time, Columbus and his crew managed to salvage the ship’s usable timber to build a fort nearby,” in reference to the Navidad, which historians say the chieftain Caonabo torched in reprisal for the Spaniards’ mistreatment of the natives.

“For centuries, the fort’s whereabouts remained a mystery, but archaeologists tracked down its likely location in 2003.”

Explorer Barry Clifford reportedly used that data and info from Columbus’ journals to locate the wreck of the ship.
