Chickens, eggs glut ‘means millions of dollar in losses’
La Vega, Dominican Republic.- The chambers of Commerce of La Vega and Espaillat provinces (north) on Sunday called the Cibao region’s poultry industry situation precarious, citing millions of dollar in losses from a chickens and eggs glut.
They said the region’s poultry farmers want president Danilo Medina’s help to solve their problem, on concern their sector could face ruin.
Chambers of Commerce executives Francisco José Morillo and Juan Carlos Ortiz said they’re concerned with the possible debacle of their sector, which creates thousands of jobs and a major source of development and funding for more than three decades.
Morillo said the national poultry industry’s excessive production has been distorted since November and fears that dozens of eggs and chickens producers will go bankrupt. “We’re one of the country’s most productive sectors but at the rate we’re going, it’s evident that we’ll see it succumb.”
