Cabarete organization wants a halt to Puerto Plata Court’s ‘tomfoolery’

Cabarete, Dominican Republic.- The Cabarete Development Association (ADECA) on Thursday asked the Supreme Court and the Justice Ministry to put a halt to what it calls “the tomfoolery which exists in Puerto Plata’s court, which has postponed the proceeding on official corruption in the District Board on six occasions.”

It notes that in a February, 2013 statement to the press Justice minister Francisco Domínguez accused municipal director Gregorio Mora (Canoa) and the former director Eddy Morfe of embezzling more than RD$185 million of District Board funds during the 2006-2010 period.

The Association said that after several hearings aborted by motions by attorneys of the accused, the Instruction Court ordered the two officials to stand criminal trial, but excluded ADECA from the proceedings, on claims it wasn’t a plaintiff in the embezzlement, despite that municipal law empowers every citizen take court action against officials.

“It’s been 15 months and the trial has yet to start  because Canoa and Morfe take turns to submit motions to abort the hearings, which are a mockery to society,” ADECA said.

Puerto Plata Panel Court presiding judge Rosa Francia Liriano on Wednesday postponed  the trial’s first hearing and rescheduled it for July15, when witnesses Guarionex Sánchez and Nicolás Domínguez failed to appear.

Too easy in this country for corruption to exist. Needs to be the top target.
