Barrick Gold’s Dominican operation nets US$1.2B in 2013

Santo Domingo.-  Barrick Gold’s Dominican Republic operation on Monday reported income of US$1.2 billion in 2013, with US$815.0 million revenue for the country.

Barrick Pueblo Viejo’s figures came from a study on mining’s impact published by Analytica, headed by economist Jacqueline Mora. It stresses the reduction of poverty in its area of influence, a growth in exports, hard currency generation, quality jobs tax and payments.

The study “Barrick Pueblo Viejo, ally of Dominican development” was unveiled Monday at a luncheon in the Embajador Hotel, attended by social, economic and political representatives and government officials.

In the activity mining Pueblo Viejo president Manuel Rueda said the sector could become the mainstay of Dominican Republic’s economy.

The study also found that Barrick Pueblo Viejo accounted for 55.5% of GDP growth in 2013, among other economic factors.
