Attorney General announces no pardons this Christmas
SANTO DOMINGO. The Attorney General of the Republic, Francisco Dominguez Brito, announced yesterday that this year, once again, there will be no pardons during the Christmas festivities.
He said that the same as last year, at this opportunity it would not be appropriate to extend presidential pardons for inmates, since it was his understanding that there are procedures established in the Penal Process Code for obtaining freedom.
“I believe that in the Penal Process Code which establishes what the mechanisms are in order for prisoners to obtain his or her freedom from the judge for the Execution of the Sentence,” he stressed.
The President of the Republic has the right to grant a total or partial pardon, pure and simple or conditional, on 27 February, 16 August and 23 December of each year. They are conceded when an inmate has served half of the sentence, and has exhibited a behavior which permits his reinsertion into society.
Dominguez Brito spoke to reporters after the signing of an agreement with the Central Electoral Board (J CE), which among other prerogatives establishes the issuance of a cédula to inmates being held in preventive custody.
