Armada has arrested 1316 persons

LAS AMERICAS AIRPORT. The Dominican Armada detained total of 1316 persons during the first 10 months of this year, among them 924 foreigners accused of using the Dominican Republic as a bridge to reach Puerto Rico illegally.

The actions came about during the January – October period after developing intelligence against illegal travelers.

During the operations 118 boats were seized, among them some were homemade and others, which had been taken from hotel complexes to be used in the crimes of human trafficking, were recovered.

On the list of those detained, persons of Haitian nationality make up the largest number of foreigners with 831, among the men and women detained on the high seas on fragile boats headed to the island of Puerto Rico.

Likewise, there were 84 Cubans, eight Hindus and one Brazilian, and 392 Dominicans to complete the total of 1316.

In a report, the Armada gave details that as part of the persecution of the illegal trips, 71 boat captains and organizers were sent on charges to the Justice Department, for violations of law 137 – 03. The courts issued 64 coercive measures of different types and 34 preventive custody orders and trials have resulted in two convictions of 10 and 15 years in jail.

The Armada adds that the that the boats and the travelers were detected along coastal areas such as Baoba del Pinal, Catuano, Higüey, Boca de Yuma, La Romana, San Pedro de Macoris, Nagua and Samana among other locales.

Vice – Admiral Edmundo Felix Pimentel, talking to the Diario Libre, said that his service will continue reinforcing the coastal areas to avoid the traffic of persons who put their lives in danger trying to cross the ocean.

He said that the operations of monitoring, detaining and seizure, are directed by Captain José Manuel Cabrera Ulloa, the chief of the Naval Intelligence Division of the Dominican Armada.

He called on citizens not to be seduced by the sale of dreams by the organizers of these trips and fragile boats.
