AINEP denies tuition hikes in private schools are out of control
SANTO DOMINGO. The president of the Association of Private Educational Institutions (AINEP), which has 108 private schools in Educational District 15-03 in the Capital, denied that the increases in the tuition for the next school year are out of control, as has been reported by diverse sectors. Rafael Rodriguez said that the increases are between 5% and 12% and have been approved by the parents association of the different schools.
In fact, at the moment that he received the team from Diario Libre, Rodriguez was sending to the Department of Accreditation of Educational Centers of the Ministry of Education, a letter from the parents association of the Luis Muñoz River School, dated 3 December 2013, approving the increases in tuition. He was also sending the “Form for the collection of information for school years 2013-2014 and 2014-2015″ in which at the request of the Ministry, the director of the school expresses in writing the changes in tuition and the investments carried out. Among these was a 12.8% salary increase for all the personnel. “It is not true that the increases are out of control,” he said, and he complained that officials of the Ministry “measure all the private schools with the same yardstick.”
Regarding the initiative of some senators to ask the Education Commission of the Senate to investigate the increases in the tuition charged by the private schools, he said that he has “no objections.”
Rodriguez also showed copies of three letters sent to the Minister of Education, Carlos Amarante Baret, between 15 April and 7 May of this year, where they express the willingness to discuss the issue of the increases and other demands. He said that until now, none of the letters has been answered.
