40% of tourists visiting the D.R. are between the ages of 21 to 35

During the first five months of 2014 approximately 1.9 million tourists visited the Dominican Republic through the country’s international airports.

Forty percent of all visitors were between the ages of 21-35; 94% visited the country on vacation; 92% stayed in a hotel; 50.1% were male and 49.9% female; 60% were from North America; 26% from Europe and 10% from South America. 40% of Tourists

Tourism in the D.R. Grows by 8.7%

During this period the number of tourists traveling to the Dominican Republic grew by 8.7%, representing 159,000 additional visitors.

Punta Cana is the Leader by Far

The Punta Cana International Airport received 1.3 million (66%) visitors; Santo Domingo, 318,000 (16%); Puerto Plata, 195,000 (10%); Santiago, 65,000 (3.3%); La Romana, 56, 000 (2.8%); and Samaná, 30,000 (1.6%).

2.4 Million Passengers

The country’s six international airports received a total of 2.4 million passengers. Of this number 182,000 are local residents (7.6%); 2.2 million are non-residents (92.4%); 230, 000 are Dominicans (9.5%); and 1.9 million are foreigners (tourists, 82.9%).

Of the total number of residents, 161,000 are Dominican nationals and 20,000 non-Dominicans. The overall movement of passengers traveling to the D.R. grew by 7.3% during this period.

During the month of January arrivals grew by 7.1%; 6.1% in February; 1.8% in March; 14% in April, and 18.4% in May. During the last two months the percentages broke previous arrival records.

Number of U.S. Tourists Grows by 37%

The country’s most important tourism market is by far the U.S., with a total number of 753,000 tourists visiting the country (37.7% of all arrivals). Other markets: Canada, 21.9% (436 thousand); France, 5.9% (116,000); Germany, 5.3% (104,000); Russia, 4.7% (94,000), and Argentina, 2.8% (55,000).
