“System-caused genocide” of Dominican retirees
Retirees in the Dominican Republic are calling retirement in the country “system-caused genocide.”
The retired community lacks health insurance and a decent monthly salary to support themselves and their families, says President of the National Federation of Pensioners Reverend Emilio Lopez.
Statistics show that the average monthly pension is $92 per month, which is not nearly enough to provide for a family. The average monthly wage in the Dominican Republic is $167.
Dominican retirees have had enough, and they have begun complaining to the government. They say that they are living in poverty and even starving because their pensions are not only insufficient but also sporadic.
The retirees are protesting and organizing forums to discuss the issue and have their voices heard.
