‘Queens of the Caribbean’ overpower rivals for gold at Veracruz
Veracruz, Mexico.- Dominican Republic’s women volleyball team Thursday night showed why they are known as the “Queens of the Caribbean,” taking their fourth straight title in international venues, going undefeated and overpowering rivals in all sets at the 22nd Central American and Caribbean Games.
Weightlifter Beatriz Piron also won the gold and Candida Vasquez the silver medal in the 48 kg female category, at the start of the tournament.
The two gold and six silver medals won as of Friday boost Dominican Republic from 7th to 5th on the leader board, past Puerto Rico and Guatemala.
Abel Montero and Maria Garcia bring home two silver medals in judo, while weightlifter Luis Garcia added two.
It was the Dominican team’s best medal harvest by the end of the sixth day of competition, with a good showing also in men’s racquetball doubles to secure a silver medal.
