Women caught at JFK smuggling drugs in makeshift diapers

Give them an “I” for imagination. Now slap on the bracelets for attempting to smuggle approximately 6-1/2 kilos of cocaine into the country by secreting the stash in makeshift adult diapers.

The New York Post reports that two Bronx neighbors returning from the Dominican Republic tried that ruse on Wednesday but were intercepted by Customs and Border Protection officers at New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport. The estimated street value of the drug is close to a quarter million dollars.

The pair, identified as Priscilla Pena and Michelle Blassingale, had just disembarked from a JetBlue airliner from Santo Domingo and made it as far as the terminal before a drug-sniffing dog began to bark. At first officers were baffled. They searched the women’s luggage but found no drugs.

Nor did a routine pat-down didn’t reveal much. Officers found that the women were a little lumpy around the middle, but that didn’t seem out of the ordinary. It was not until authorities dug a little deeper that they discovered that each of the women was wearing a “diaper” of sorts filled with a substantial quantity of the drug. The device was rigged girdle-like around their hind quarters.

Blassingale was held in custody by a Brooklyn federal judge, while Pena was released on $150,000 bond.
