Who can practice medicine in the DR
In today’s Hoy newspaper, Tuesday 17 September, Dr. Jesus Feris Iglesias writes about the procedures soon to be implemented for the new re-certification of physicians to practice in the Dominican Republic. The new process will be implemented by the National Recertification Council (Consejo Nacional de Recertificacion) Conarem. The council members are the Ministry of Public Health, Ministry of Higher Education, Dominican Association of Medical Schools, Dominican Social Security Institute, UASD University and the Dominican Medical Association (CMD).
The Conarem is in charge of setting the rules for the practice of physicians in the DR. There will be continued education programs for practicing physicians, and the physicians will have to pass tests to continue to practice.
As Dr. Feris explains, the main objective of the medical recertification is to encourage physicians to stay up to date, to at the same time guarantee the quality, efficiency of health services in the DR. The project includes a recertification period of 70 hours or four university credits per year.
