U.S. helps the Police with US$100,000, as hoteliers question efficiency

Santo Domingo.- The U.S. Embassy on Tuesday donated nearly US$100,000 in equipment to the National Police, as tourism sector leaders warn that safe areas around hotels cannot be created by isolating them from the problems which affect the rest of the country.

The Embassy’s donation, through the Narcotics Enforcement Affairs Section and coordinated with the Regional Security Office, includes 175 bulletproof vests, night vision cameras, computers, and equipment to help police restructure its technology platform and information systems.

Dominican Republic Hotels and Tourism Association (ASONAHORES) president Luis Emilio Rodriguez cautioned that safety and security must be considered one of the pillars for the country’s competitiveness,

The businessman leader lauded what he called the great work by the Tourism Police, but cautioned that the World Economic Forum’s Tourism Competitiveness Index questions the country’s safety and protection, a situation he affirms jeopardizes the sector.
