Transport strike: Poor road conditions at Luperon tourist route
PUERTO PLATA. – Due to the deplorable conditions found at Luperon tourist highway that links dozens of communities from the Gran Parada de Montellano to the municipality of Gurabo in Santiago, several drivers and transporters unions have announced a work stoppage on Monday, July, 22nd, 2013. As explained by the leader José Oscar Rojas Rodríguez, this action will be executed as a sign of protest against the broken promises by government authorities, who on more than 20 occasions have said that the central government will undertake the repair of that road, even the heavy machinery has arrived at the place.
The constant and dangerous landslides that occur on that road that borders the Cordillera Septentrional, just “have left a narrow sledge so it’s hard to walk past for residents of Yásica Municipal Districts and Pedro Garcia, along with the communities of El Mango, Palo Indio, Yaroa Lajas, La Cumbre, among others.
Rojas Rodriguez indicated that the corrosive action of the heavy rains that are recorded in the area have become a real danger for that road, to the point that drivers who dare to walk through are exposed to go to a ravine by bad straits and this tourist road. Also the deplorable conditions of the road are affecting farmers and ranchers who face serious difficulties in transporting their products to the markets as Luperon tourist road is in impassable conditions.
