Tourism reveals massive construction of hotel rooms to lodge more tourists
Santo Domingo.- The Minister of Tourism on Thursday announced a plan to start the massive construction of hotel rooms as soon as possible, to lodge a higher number of tourists expected as the result of the sector’s promotion abroad.
Francisco Javier Garcia said the country has more than 38,000 approved hotel rooms, but noted that all the projects require financing.
He said all the projects have their land and the permits from the Public Works, Tourism and Environment ministries, as well as the municipalities.
“This means that they’re projects registered to work with proposals for private sector funding for these types of projects. If we want to receive 10 million tourists in the next 10 years, we must also increase the number of rooms,” the official said.
Garcia noted that the difficult global economic situation delayed all the approved projects and construction starts over the last four years.
“Costa Rica’s most important developer recently announced that they will come to the Dominican Republic to strike a strategic alliance to develop a project of billions of dollars in the area of Miches township with the Cisneros Group,” Garcia said, after meeting with president Danilo Medina in the National Palace.
