Too many children are dying in the Dominican Republic hospital
The Minister of Public Administration, Ramon Ventura Camejo, announced on Sunday 3 November that at least 50 children die every month in the Doctor Arturo Grullon public hospital in Santiago.
He said that he considers this to be far too high, saying that there are at least two deaths each day.
Ventura Camejo said that according to a report by the medical authorities at the hospital the problem is that when the children are admitted many are already seriously ill and some die when they first arrive.
They went on to say that they have referrals from the 14 provinces in the Cibao that includes a large number of Haitians, which uses more than 30% of their budget.
