The government scrambles to deal with the region’s highest fuel prices

Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic’s fuel prices –at US$6.10 for premium gasoline and diesel at US$5.00 per gallon- are the highest in Central America and the Caribbean, where the average is US$4.6 and US$4.26 respectively.

Panama boasts the lowest fuel prices in all of Central America, at US$4.37 for premium gasoline and US$3.86 for diesel, followed by Guatemala and El Salvador.

In the Caribbean, Puerto Rico has the lowest fuel prices, at around US$3 per gallon.

The high fuel prices have forced the Dominican government to seek alternative markets, especially natural gas, to lower costs.

In that regard, Puerto Rican Secretary of State David Bernier Rivera met with President Danilo Medina to advance that initiative, aimed at significant lower fuel costs in both nations.
