Sugar exports to Europe to increase this year
Santo Domingo.– The Dominican Republic plans to export about 40.000 tonnes of cane sugar to the European Union this year, the highest volume ever as domestic production in 2012-13 is seen exceeding expectations.
According to Casimiro Ramos, the director of the Dominican Sugar Institute (Inazucar), sugar production was previously estimated at 540.000 tonnes in 2012-13, but actual output should be 60.000 tonnes higher.
Ramos said the Dominican Republic will also fulfill a quota of 188.900 tonnes for the U.S. market. He added that the country is self-sufficient in sugar production, and the Government will make the necessary contributions for this industry to continue growing.
