Spike Lee deflates Dominican Republic’s big-screen dream

Santo Domingo.- director, producer, writer and actor Shelton Spike Lee on Tuesday called the local film-production capacity unprofitable, and in his view “the country needs a free and State-backed film school to become part of the culture .”

He said it’s essential that the Caribbean country has a good film school to form for a production staff, “ if you really want to develop this discipline.”

He said he’s quite willing to collaborate with the Dominican Republic to develop a film industry, as long as it has the needed support.

Lee, who spoke with reporters at the 16th annual International Book Fair, of which he’s special guest, noted that he knows Dominicans who’ve made it big in the arts, music and sports, but would also like to see the same thing happen in film.
