Spain’s OHL Group shows interest in developing luxury resort in the DR

The OHL Group of Spain, one of Europe’s most important construction companies, informed the Dominican Ministry of Tourism its interest in developing a luxury resort complex in the Dominican Republic.

The complex would feature several hotels, a golf course and marina, to be built on three million meters of land.

OHL is the owner of the famed Mayakoba resort (situated in the Mayan Riviera in Mexico), featuring the Rosewood, Fairmont, Bayan Tree, Four Season and Andaz (Hyatt) luxury hotels.

The company also specializes in fertilizers, energy and real estate, among others.

This luxury development could occupy three-million square meters, and will run under the all-inclusive concept.

The information was provided by the Dominican Minister of Tourism, Francisco Javier Garcia, after he met with Andres Pan de Soraluce, President of OHL Developments.

He was told that the project proposal is in its final stages.

The company has various subdivisions, specifically in the area of fertilizers, energy and real estate, among others. It is the sixth largest construction company in Spain, the seventh in the world, and the first in Latin America.

It currently operates in five continents and 90% of the company’s revenues come from its international activities.

The Mayakoba

The Mayakoba Resort, in the Mayan Riviera in Mexico, has become a model global project in the area of sustainable tourism.

The resort received the Ulysses 2011 prize, and award issued by the World Tourism Organization and was recognized by the Rainforest Alliance in 2010 as the first resort in the Americas to implement global sustainable tourism criteria.

Luxury hotels, such as the Rosewood, Fairmont, Bayan Tree, Four Season and the Andaz (Hyatt), are situated within the complex.

Its golf course was designed by Greg Norman, and was the first to host a round of the PGA Tour outside the United States.

It boasts 10 kilometers of intricate channels, providing the resort’s most important transportation system.

In all, there are 20 acres of lakes and canals within the complex. The Jim McLean Golf Academy has been in operation at the resort since 2008, and the American Automobile Association (AAA) has given the complex a five-star rating.
