Senator slams AERODOM as US$550M bond row widens
Santo Domingo.- Senator Carlos Castillo on Tuesday said at the end of its contract period, the Dominican airports management company AERODOM will leave the terminals like an empty shell.
THe opposition lawmaker said proof of that is the higher fees and poor quality of the services offered at the airports, in addition to the air conditioners he affirms don’t work.
He said Aerodom isn’t making the needed investments to keep the airports in top condition and compete within the Caribbean’s tourism, jeopardizing president Danilo Medina’s goal of attracting 10 million tourists yearly.
The lawmaker said by offering a US$550 million bond Aerodom puts its concession contract in debt at a 9.75% interest. “This means they‘ll pay US$53 million twice-annually.
For his part Airports Department director Arístides Fernández Zucco admitted that he’s unaware of Aerodom’ bond, a revelation which senator Adriano Sánchez Roa says “makes the situation more serious than previously thought.”
