Santo Domingo mayor: No pedestrian bridge on Malecon
Santo Domingo. – Santo Domingo mayor Roberto Salcedo yesterday reiterated the City Council’s ban against the construction of a pedestrian bridge over the 30 de Mayo highway (Malecon) in front of Unicaribe University, being built illegally by the OISOE government agency.
He said the City Council “cannot yield to the request, because the future interest of the university is to create a parking lot at the Malecon sea coast for 300 vehicles morning, day and night.”
The mayor called on Unicaribe to build its own lots as other universities have done. “Unibe, PUCMM, UASD Apec all have built their own parking.”
“The construction of a pedestrian bridge over the 30 de Mayo highway would set a negative precedent for the city, since there are other businesses such as hotels, which also want it, and the Malecon seaside promenade cannot be filled with concrete above,” he said.
“This is an exceptional case. “We’re speaking of an university, which is a business. They can’t expect the city to resolve their parking problem,” Salcedo said, and vowed to take the OISOE to court.
Salcedo spoke during the signing of an agreement with Apec University through which its students clean beaches three days per year with the City Council’s support.
