Santiago bypass ready by February
Minister of Public Works Gonzalo Castillo says that Santiago’s Circunvalacion Norte bypass will be finished by February 2014. The Ministry of Public Works has set the date for the formal inauguration for 22 February.
This essential roadway will ease traffic flow heading north or south of Santiago, the country’s second largest city. Cargo transport costs will be reduced as the bypass will also be open to freight transporters. At present, onward traffic to Puerto Plata and other northern destinations has to pass through the congested city streets.
The highway is being built by the Grupo Estrella-Odebrecht at a cost of US$70 million. Construction first started 18 years ago during the Balaguer government, as reported in Hoy.
