Samana port awaits world’s 2nd biggest cruise ship

Samana, Dominican Republic.- The group of developers that promote the Samana marine terminal (Termasam) on Tuesday announced that the world’s second biggest cruise ship, which can carry 4,180 passengers, will make port calls starting 2014.

The ship Quantum of the Seas, of the Royal Caribbean line, would dock at Samana once the modern terminal concludes, within 10 months, said Termasam president Federico Schad in a press conference.

He said the ship’s arrival would be a huge boost for the region’s economy, hobbled by a 60% plunge in cruise ship arrivals since 2009.

The business leader said the higher number of tourists would also spur the economy with the US$250,000 he affirms is injected with each visit, a considerable boost to Samana’s economy. “With the terminal, capable of operating three vessels, we hope to increase cruise tourism by 50%. We’re talking about the arrival of 50,000 passengers a year, and each visitor spends US$60 on average.”

“Today Samana has poor port facilities which have sparked complaints from cruise lines, which have led to fewer visits and losses of nearly US$30 million,” Schad said.
