Russia and Dominican Republic sign drug enforcement agreement

MOSCOW, June 6 (RAPSI) - Russia’s Federal Drug Control Service Director Viktor Ivanov and his Dominican counterpart, Rolando Rosado Mateo, signed a drug enforcement agreement on Thursday, RIA Novosti reported.

The document was signed on the sidelines of the International Drug Enforcement Conference in Moscow.

“The Dominican Republic is a major travel destination which welcomes up to three million tourists every year and has a population of 9 million. It is no wonder that criminals try to capitalize on this. Our agreement will enable us to exchange information promptly about groups and individuals suspected of trafficking prohibited substances,” Ivanov said.

He said that the drug enforcement agreement also provides for holding joint investigation operations, exchanging experience in drug enforcement and training drug enforcers.

“We are closely cooperating with the Dominican law enforcement authorities. This has recently helped us expose a criminal group in the Dominican Republic which included Russian members,” Ivanov said.
