Road around Enriquillo Lake ready by 20 May
Santo Domingo.- State Works Engineers Supervising Office (OISOE) director Miguel Pimentel announced the conclusion the Road “Enriquillo Lake Circuit” on 20 May, an ambitious road project which links southwestern Barahona and Bahoruco Jimaní, Independencia province.
Enriquillo’s waters have swollen in recent years, flooding roads and harming the economy and development of several parts of the “Deep South.”
He said OISOE works toward the final solution of the problems caused by the overflowed lake and improve safety along the entire route.
Pimentel said the new highway bypasses the existing road on the span to the border with Haiti, after it was also flooded by Lake Sumatra.
The official aid to avoid a halt of traffic between Boca de Cachon and Jimani, the road was built on the mountains around 15 feet above the lake’s level, where more than 100,000 cubic meters of topsoil had to be removed.
