Ricardo Dina won
The cycling club of Sosúa (Velo Club Sosúa) organized a cycle race for Sunday, January 27. At half past eight cyclists arrived from different parts of the country and parked their car in the parking lot of Banco Popular. There were amateurs and enthusiasts from Santo Domingo, Santiago, Higüey, Sabenete and Cabarete among them. There were also four members of the ‘Sosúa Cycling Club’, to know Franky, Cees, Tanja and Kenny among the participants present. All cyclists were enrolled by David Ferreira, the organizer of the cycling race.
By 10 AM there were around fifty riders at the start and the complete peloton went off, heading for Rio San Juan. But due to bad weather, it rained frequently very hard, it was decided to turn around and go back to Sosúa just before Rio San Juan. The first intermediate sprint started at Rompiola where the road runs along the ocean. Just past Resort Bahia Principal San Juan was the sprint of the first part of the course. Franky of ‘Sosúa Cycling Club’ helped his teammate Kenny (Don Andres and Hispaniola club shirt) to finish second.
The final sprint and also finish was at the bridge (Mimbre y Ratan), just before Sosúa. Finishing in Sosúa itself would be too dangerous. It was Ricardo Dina, who won the final sprint. Tanja was the winner of the women, but that was not so difficult, because there were only two women of which one gave up because of the rain. The oldest participant (70), Cees, club member of ‘Sosúa Cycling Club’ ended last, but he did ride the 120 km!
The cycle race was organized in collaboration with ADSS (Asociación por el Desarrollo Sostenible the Sosúa).
The next cycle race will be on Saturday 16 February in Santiago.
