Revamped airport aims to recoup Puerto Plata’s dwindling tourism

Santo Domingo.- President Danilo Medina headed the re-inaugural of Puerto Plata’s International Airport (AIGL), Dominican Republic’s third larges tourism air terminals on Friday, July,12′th.

Dominican Airports management company AERODOM remodeled and expanded the terminal at a cost of RD$300 million, and the first phase includes runway lighting and repairs of parking areas and check-in counters, while the second phase two new and remodeled departure and arrival waiting areas, customs, car rentals and food court.

Two new boarding gates will also be put into service, in addition to the five already operating, and the arrival and departure salons on the first and second floors.

Revived tourism

Gregorio Luperon International Airport (AIGL), just minutes from Puerto Plata and Sosúa and around 25 minutes from Cabarete, was built in 1971 to launch the North coast’s tourism.

The government has stressed that the AIGL’s reopening marks the start of Medina’s plan to make tourism the driving force behind the country’s development, and create 400,000 jobs.
