Puerto Plata region: Tourism on decline – dozens of hotel employees will be unemployed

PUERTO PLATA. – The undeniable  than ever experienced low tourism in this province has forced the managements of the major hotels in the area to reduce the workforce since occupancy is only 25 percent.

According to data supplied by a power full credit, it is expected that later this month of August and early September hotel occupancy will be from 20 to 25 percent. Major hotels from Luperon to Puerto Plata – Cabarete observed reduction in foreign guests even for weekend tourism that used to be the bright spot of offseason.

Several workers who sought the omission said that the occupation of the tourism sector in the area of Puerto Plata is considerably down. ”In previous years at least the weekend maintained a significant occupation, but this year there is nothing, hotels are like semi deserted” explained a hotel employee. At the same time, they were fearful of unusual movements in the administrative offices which has been interpreted as potential layoffs will go on the streets by the unexpected low occupations in hotels. It also emphasized that in all sales offices of the different hotels in the area, one can see action in making special offers to get the summer season, with the goal of improving the flow of guests.

    Maybe some lessons will be learned. They surely need to.
