Puerto Plata asks for budget money
Civil and community organizations from Puerto Plata held a protest outside the National Congress building in Santo Domingo yesterday, Tuesday 22 October to ask for changes to the 2014 budget to ensure the expansion of the Puerto Plata-Navarrete road, the building of a hospital in Sosua and the renovation of the Puerto Plata cargo port, along with other projects. Congress is reviewing the budget bill sent by the Executive Branch.
The groups, which included the Gestor Pro Puerto Plata Committee, the Confederation of Neighborhood Groups, the Port Stevedores Union and the Lawyers’ College, assembled with placards outside Congress followed by a meeting with the deputies from Puerto Plata province.
Speaking on behalf of the deputies, Jose Ignacio Paliza said that the widening of the road was not in the budget despite financial support from the Brugal company. He also highlighted the need to remodel the cargo port in order to improve economic activity in the province.
As far as the hospital in Sosua is concerned, he said this was an old campaign promise that had now become urgent, as there were over 60,000 inhabitants in Sosua and surrounding areas without including those in Sabaneta de Yasica and Cabarete.
