Price of bread to jump as high as 20%
Santo Domingo.- The price of bread will jump as high as 20% in mid-April, as the tax reform on lead to higher cost for the ingredients used to make it, affirmed Hector Delgado, president of the bakers grouped in the Umphi,
He said all bakers nationwide will meet April 14 to discuss the higher prices averaging 21% on ingredients used to make bread including sugar, oils, plastic bags, flour and fuel, and which he says many now pay ITEBIS (VAT) tax.
Quoted by eldia.com.do via phone, Delgado said other products used in bread-making have increased even more than 21% and some.
“Unfortunately, we can not continue to bear these costs, because there are products derived from flour which no longer leave benefits, what we get are losses, and we hadn’t met in an assembly before, awaiting prices to stabilize. But all ingredients have risen, so we have to make a move about that,” the business leader said.
Delgado said bread which costs five pesos per bun in grocery stores will increase at least one peso, adding that when it climbs just one peso, it alarms the population, but when plantains jump more than that, nothing happens.
