President wants more hours for schooling
At the moment schools are being built throughout the country. President Danilo Medina would like to improve education significantly during his time in office. So far students only have a few hours of teaching per day. The youngest in the morning, the older ones in the afternoon and the olderst students in the evening.
With this plan of the President to double the number of schools he wants to ensure that the students are taught both in the morning and in the afternoon. That means doubling the number of hours. The students will also receive a free breakfast and lunch, this to give the students who live far from the school to have the opportunity to stay in school throughout the day. Furthermore Danilo wants to improve the training of teachers. Inadequately trained teachers are required to further training. The teachers at the universities must have a master’s degree at least. As expected there is much resistance among the teachers to these new requirements. Many teachers are not sufficiently qualified. For example, there are foreign language teachers who do not speak these languages themselves. But everything indicates that Danilo will continue his plans. As evidence of this, the president inaugurates the newly built school ‘Santa Madre Teresa de Calcuta’ in Montellano on 19 August and thus giving the starting shot for the new educational year. In Sosúa there are now plans for the construction of additional school buildings. Also in Sosúa, the teaching hours will double for students.
